My Health Record

What it is

Different organisations and entities within the health system keep their own records.  My Health Record is Australia’s national digital health record system, designed to store key health information in one secure online location.

In general, it may include documents such as:

  • Shared health summaries

  • Hospital discharge summaries

  • Pathology and imaging reports

  • Prescription and dispensing information

  • Organ donor status

It is important to note it is not a complete copy of a person’s medical file; it only contains specific information that has been selectively uploaded to the system.

Who funds and runs it

My Health Record is funded by the Australian Government.  It is operated by the Australian Digital Health Agency.  The system operates under Commonwealth legislation and privacy laws. Access, use, and security settings are governed by those laws and related regulations.

How it fits into the health system

My Health Record is a key part of Australia’s digital health infrastructure.  It aims to improve communication between different organisations and health care providers.

How information is added and used

Healthcare providers may selectively upload clinical documents to a person’s My Health Record.  Individuals may have access to their own My Health record through secure online portal, allowing them to view and/or manage privacy settings.   Importantly, access and control features are determined by legislation and system rules, which may change.

Having a My Health Record does not guarantee that all health information will be available, nor does it guarantee that a healthcare provider will be able to access it.  Clinical access may depend on:

  • The healthcare provider

  • The healthcare setting

  • Technical integration with clinical software

  • Location, including rural and remote areas

  • Digital access, depending on infrastructure such as nternet availability

Privacy and security

My Health Record operates within a legislative privacy framework with strict defined rules about who can access information and under what conditions.  As with any digital system, security and privacy arrangements are governed by law and policy and may evolve over time. Official government sources provide the most current information.
