My Medicare

What it is

My Medicare is an Australian Government initiative designed as a voluntary patient registration system.  It allows individuals to formally register with a general practice, general practitioner, or, in some cases, an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service.

It would be important to highlight it does not replace Medicare; Medicare is the Australian national health funding system whereas My Medicare is a registration model within primary health care.

Why it exists

My Medicare sits predominantly within primary health care.  Its aim is to:

  • Allow an individual to identify a regular practice or doctor

  • Support continuity of care

  • Strengthen connection between patients and primary care services

When a patient enrols in My Medicare, they may be able to access additional funding arrangement.  The polices, rules and regulations regarding the My Medicare program are determined by the Australian Government, and may be subject to periodic review and change.

Who funds and decides

My Medicare is funded by the Australian Government, within Medicare.  The Australian Government determines program rules and funding structures.

Clinical decisions remain the responsibility of healthcare professionals; and registration usually does not alter clinical independence.

How it works in general

In general terms;

  • Registration is voluntary, at the discretion of the patient

  • A person may nominate a regular general practice or doctor

  • The practice or practitioner must agree to the registration

  • Some government funding arrangements may be linked to registration status

  • A patient is able to change registration to an alternative practice or practitioner

It would be important to note, registration does not guarantee appointment availability, bulk billing, or specific services as access to care is influenced by many factors including, but not limited to, workforce capacity, local availability, and practice policies.

How it fits into the broader health system

My Medicare sits within Australia’s primary care system, often the first point of contact and often involves general practice. It operates along other parts of the health system. It does not replace private health insurance. It does not create new clinical entitlements beyond those determined by government policy.
